Here are the books that I’ve added to my bookshelves recently!
At the Pond: Swimming at the Hampstead Ladies’ Ponds
I run an Instagram account called @myhampstead. I really enjoy exploring the area and beyond (although there’s lots more to be done!). I’d seen this in bookshops a lot, so I took myself on a much-needed walk one weekend and popped into Waterstones Hampstead. I haven’t managed to go to the ladies’ pond in Hampstead Heath this year, but at least I’ll get to read about it! Officially opened to the public in 1925, it is the only wild swimming spot in the UK that is reserved for women.
What Magic is This? by Holly Bourne
My insta-friend Michelle visited West Hampstead recently and I took her to West End Lane Books. Holly Bourne is one of my favourite YA authors, so I bought her new novella, What Magic is This? It’s published by Barrington Stoke, who create readable and accessible books for children with dyslexia and reluctant readers. For example, they use a dyslexia-friendly font specially created to make reading easier.
Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams
I also bought the book that Michelle was currently reading, Our Stop. She recommended it to me because she thought that it’d be a great read for fans of The Flatshare. If you haven’t read The Flatshare and are in your 20s-30s, it’s amazing! This one’s about strangers Nadia and Daniel, who both get the 7:30 train every morning.
There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon
I can’t seem to step into Waterstones Piccadilly without buying a book. This time I bought There’s Something About Sweetie. It’s a companion novel to When Dimple Met Rishi, one of my favourite books. It’s about the unexpected love story involving Ashish Patel and Sweetie Nair. Sandhya Menon is one of my favourite authors and so I’m hoping to pick this one up soon!
Sourdough by Robin Sloan
On another spontaneous trip to Waterstones, this time with Beth, I bought a copy of Robin Sloan’s Sourdough. I loved Mr Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookshop when I read it years ago. Sourdough is about Lois Clary, who’s initiated into a fantastical and possibly fantastically sinister underground world: a secret market that aims to fuse home-cooked food with cutting-edge technology.
