It’s been a little while since I wrote about my trip to Bath and blogged about my visit to Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. Now I’m back with another beautiful Bath bookshop for you! I did not know much about Topping & Company before I visited, but I’m so very glad I found the time to go. It was a wonderful shelter from the rain and I should have stayed put, curled up with a cup of coffee and a book – I got soaked as soon as I left the shop (which is why I unfortunately didn’t get a photo of the shop front!).
Obviously the first thing I did was check out the children’s and YA section – full of lots of lovely colourful things. I’ve said before that an excellent children’s department is really important to me as a customer. I was delighted to discover that Toppings & Company clearly had a knowledgeable and dedicated children’s bookseller.
I bought a copy of Maggie Harcourt’s The Last Summer of Us, which was carefully wrapped up and signed.
As this was my first trip on my own, buying a book about three teenagers on a UK road trip seemed fitting!
I tore myself away from the children’s department and looked to see what else I could find. Topping & Company is a long, thin bookshop and there were many little nooks and crannies, all filled with an excellent variety of books.
One of my favourite things about independent bookshops is the curated displays and thoughtful recommendations. I particularly enjoyed the ‘Our Favourites’ blackboard with each of the booksellers’ current favourite titles on it.
And they have their own science fiction book club! Whether you’re a fan of literary fiction, cookery, children’s, science fiction or something entirely different… there’s so much on offer. You don’t have to be a particular type of person to enjoy visiting Topping & Company – they cater for everyone.
Upstairs to non-fiction reminded me a little of Daunt Books in London, where every space is made use of and there’s always something new for you to discover in a unexpected place.
Lots of beautiful cards and gifts on display!
Topping & Company has a very homely feel. They offer free coffee or tea and have adorable little tables and stools for you to sit on while you enjoy a good book. I’ll definitely be going back the next time I visit Bath.
